In this lesson, I share with the class a children’s book I have written and illustrated. It is a sequel to another of mine called, “Mommy, We Made a Boo-Boo”. In this book, 2 brothers occupied by television, lose track of their baby brother in a game of hide-and-seek. Their imaginations run wild, as the fear he is not only lost, but has stumbled into monsters. At one point in the book, they imagine that the Boogey Man has captured him.
I close the book at that page without showing them my Boogey Man character, and instruct them to design their own. Using drawing, coloring and collage media, they create their monster in the closet complete with an opening door to reveal the creature.
With much anticipation, I show the Boogey Man from my book and complete the story. The brothers finally find their baby sibling unharmed, and promise to pay more attention to him. It is a happy ending to a successful and creative project that the students very much enjoy.
